Derby Nights

Last Friday we went out to the Prince William County Fair.  We really wanted to go last year but the day we selected ended up being rained out.  Months ago I put the fair on our calendar and we were determined to make it.
The real reason I wanted to go to the fair....the demolition derby.  It's one of the few times that the country comes out in me.  I love a good derby, maybe it's because they feel like home to me and there are so few things here that feel like that.

I tried to prepare the kids beforehand, we watched a few videos and they did just fine.  It was a neat thing to be able to share this tradition with the kids.  Amy just stood there, mouth open, watching the action unfold.  It's been some happy days for our little family.
Back in the old days, Heber and I loved going to the derby together.  We always went to the one in Logan several times.  It had some good people watching but the best of all is the Tooele County Derby.  There are people there like you have never seen.  I remember being pretty judgemental of parents having their young kids there back in the day, now I'm one of those people.  I obviously didn't know anything before.

Way, way back in the day, I was in the Tooele County royalty, I helped at the derby and assisted with the awards.  We rode in a big truck into the arena.  It's fun to look back on all the experiences that have brought me to today.  Heber was there with me and we still talk about the driver who was out on parole who tried to run over an official.  There's just no place like a derby for drama and entertainment.
I'm excited to pencil it in to our calendar again next year!

Summerfest 2014

Summerfest is my favorite Logan weekend of the year.  As a creative, I love to see what others create and get inspiration.  As an arts festival, Summerfest is filled with inspiration.

We had both Heber and I's parents come into town to enjoy the festivities.
It's been on bucket list to see a play at the Lyric Repertory Theatre.  I spent a summer as an intern working there and loved it.  We were able to get out and see "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."  I laughed so hard and really enjoyed it.  But, you know me, I love to see theatre and music performed live, there is magic in it.
And during all of the activities of this weekend, Amy has almost mastered sitting up.  She is just getting so big.
We had a great time.  Leo did too!

Shaved Ice

Our favorite shaved ice shack opened up this week.  We, of course, went as soon as we heard.  I guess everybody else in town knows it's the best because we had to wait in line for a good half hour.  But it was totally worth it.

I got my favorite, red raspberry.  I'm a fan of red.  Heber got peach with ice cream and Leo got orange.  It was gone in about two minutes.  He really is my son.

It's been interesting experiencing some things that we loved about Logan with our kids.  Summer really is the best time here.  I'm looking forward to free concerts at the Tabernacle, picnics in Hydro Park, the farmers market and yes, many many more snow cones to come!  I may even branch out and get a different kind.  Nah, don't mess with perfection.

Water

I am not a huge fan of water activities.  Swimming, meh.  Waterskiing, meh. Pretty much all of them.  I'm not sure why.  We weren't big water people growing up, I guess.

Leo loves it.
I took him to the splash pad today and he ran right through all of the water.  Big sprinklers, small ones, he loved them and ran through them all.  He ran until he was shivering and had blue lips.

He was so tired by the end that he passed out in the car with crumbs all over his face.

I guess we are going to have a water loving summer then.  Maybe I'll grow to like it.  It really can't be a bad thing in hot and humid weather, right?

Summer

It finally feels like summer. The sun has come out to stay and Hebs and I are settling into a routine. I like the somewhat slower pace of summer, sleeping in a little, and only having one class to worry about. Now, if only my job didn't gear up into a stressful time. We can't have it all.

The warmer weather brings tons of activities to participate in - some of the best of the whole year. Last weekend it was Summerfest at the Tabernacle. Artists from all around come to showcase their wares. I liked it but have to admit that some of the booths (especially the photographers) felt very much the same. There were some standout ones that made up for it. We ended up having to go on two nights because we spent the first running into people and didn't get to more than a few booths, not that I'm complaining.

The farmer's market is in full gear. We've gone a couple of times. I haven't yet stopped by Crumb Brother's booth for their delectable sweet croissant thingys. How I love them and the fresh lemonade too. I'm really trying to hold back on some of the sweets.

Our fridge has also been full of produce. We started participating in Bountiful Baskets - a produce co-op. I look forward to what will arrive in our basket and we have been pleasantly surprised by everything, except the 12 heads of bac choy. What exactly do you cook with bac choy? We landed on Chinese food. The rest has been delicious.

I'm loving summer. What have you been up to? Anything really fun I'm missing out on?

Community Day

It's almost the end of September. How can I have already been in school for a month? There have been a few things that have fallen through the cracks as far as blogging that I would like to post.

Do you remember back to the post about the community day that I was planning? Well, I want to finally share some pictures. It was a really good day and I was so pleased with how it all turned out. All of the long days, stress and hard work paid off.

The day of the event, back in August, I woke up to rainy skies. With everything going on outside, I was worried that it would all be rained out but it eased up enough to get everything set up and stopped completely just a few minutes before we started. The weather picked up again just 10 minutes before the end of the event. I think someone was watching out for me.

We had activities, skydivers, food and ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. Over 35 volunteers help to make it such a special day. Here are some pictures.

I want to put a special something in here about Heber. I couldn't have pulled it off without him. He was there every step of the way encouraging and helping me, even if it meant stuffing name tags at 10:30 at night. And also a special thank you to all of you who came to support me. I so appreciated you taking the time, especially Mom L., Matt, Whitney and Granny Barbs.
