Hammocks

Last week Heber surprised me with a pair of hammocks for our back porch.  We'd been looking at them at REI and then there they were on our doorstep.

Back when I first went to Peru, when I was in high school, we visited the Amazon and stayed at a little jungle bungalow.  They had a hut strung with hammocks and Loni, dad and I spent a good amount of time hanging in the hammocks and listening to the birds and monkeys and general jungle sounds.  I purchased my first hammock there.

When I was in college, I wanted to be able to string it up and take a swing.  Having no experience with rope and such, I asked Heber (back when we were dating) to help me get set up.  We got some rope and headed up into Green Canyon (the true canyon because we share a name).  Heb tied it to a couple of trees and invited me to try it out.  I hopped right in and immediately plummeted to the ground.  The ropes failed me.  Ever since then, I've always had Heber try it first.  When we did get it hung, we spent a good amount of time in that hammock.
Us, back in the day, up Green Canyon

Up the Canyon in 2003.
When we got married, the gift that Heb gave me for our wedding was a large rope and wood hammock.  One of the really nice ones.  The problem was, we never had anywhere to hang it up.  First we lived in the old house, then our condo and there never was space to hang it up.  There was one time that Heber tried to build a stand that led to an ER visit (go back and read that post, epic.)  Even now, our place doesn't have a spot to hang it up.  It looks kind of sad all rolled up for all these years.

So it's pretty significant that we now have hammocks hanging on our deck.  We spent a good part of Sunday afternoon swinging in the breeze.
