the Mother of All Libraries

When we moved to VA, almost the first thing we did, after unloading the truck, was to find the local library and to get ourselves library cards.

There is just something about libraries, they make me feel at home no matter where I am. I think it's all the time I spent at Grandma Barbara's library growing up. Among the stacks, I just feel like me. I love knowing I can go somewhere and find books and new things and check them out to my heart's content.

I actually spent a lot of time at the library the first few weeks. Without internet at home (gasp), I would run down almost daily to use the net and to check out books.

This last weekend, Heber and I went into the city to tour the mother of all libraries, the Library of Congress.

They have a copy of every book published in the U.S. What makes it even better (if that's possible) is the beautiful architecture of the main building, the Jefferson Library. This is the library with the iconic round reading room. It is on my list of life goals to get a card there and spend an afternoon reading.

The neatest exhibit of all was the collection of Thomas Jefferson's book. It was his book collection that started the Library of Congress. Thank goodness for the foresight to recognize the need for libraries and open access to anyone! Almost all of the books in his collection are on display in round shelves. This picture does not even do it justice.

And the architecture, Oh my. This was one beautiful building. It could rival anything in Europe.

I too love this building! I lucked out with a private tour once while visiting a friend of mine out there and walked around with my jaw dropped the entire time. :O

Super awesome building. I went to DC with 18 month old Liv & prego with Evy & didn't get to spend too much time there. I need to go back without children.

Wow! (I'll just leave it at that.)
