Really?

I ran onto this job posting for a hotel in town. Perhaps it will help all of you that live outside of Logan to get an idea of what job hunting is actually like here.

Recently, MSNBC did a big interview with Logan's mayor highlighting the low unemployment rate in Logan and asking how it happened. Logan's mayor said that we were conservative and prepared for the economic downturn, I say that is a joke. I think a much better statistic would be, who is underemployed in Logan. Take this job posting for example.

One position: Temporary, 7/1/09-6/1/10
International marketing, advertising and sales.

Duties: contact foreign travel agents and tour groups, website translation, motel front desk clerk duties (answering phone, taking reservations, customer service, cleaning). Phone and computer skills, high degree of fluency in German, French and English required (send documentation and proof of proficiency), cashier experience, college degree.

Did you read that, fluency in German, French and English and a college degree? Wow.

For all of these things, with no benefits, what is the pay?

$8.50 per hour

I love Logan.

Valentine's Day

It's the big V-day this week. Pull out your pink hued paper, make treats and think of ways to show some love.

Since Heber and I have been together, Valentine's days have been a source of entertainment in our relationship. It's not that we haven't tried but something always seems to go wrong. So, for your reading enjoyment, our top valentine's days.

Love, already?
Heber went out on our first date in January, so when Valentine's Day rolled around, we had only been on a few dates. Heb and I went up to Bear Lake and had some pizza. He brought me a very sweet Valentine card. He wrote about some of the things he like about me and in trying to find another word for like used the L word, yes, love. Not that he loved me but that he loved something about me but as a young 18 year old, how do you not freak out about the word love? This day actually turned out to be a real turning point in our relationship.

Radiated, quarantined, shaken and x-rayed flowers
When I was living in DC, Heber, decided that he would have some flowers delivered. What he didn't know was that they would be mailed and when you send something to the House of Representatives, no matter what it is, it is put under lockdown for several days and tested in any number of ways to verify safety. When it did finally get to me days later, the flowers were still beautiful.

The almost dinner at the Motor Lodge
Heb and I thought it would be a great idea one year after we were married to recreate our first valentine's day by going back up to Bear Lake to the same pizza place. We drove the snowy road up there only to discover that the restaurant was closed along with most of the rest of the town. We pulled into the gas station to try to get some help. He said that the only place open in town was the motor lodge. How romantic. By this time we were pretty discouraged, who wants to eat at the motor lodge on this day that is supposed to be special. We ran onto a flier for a burger joint in town that was offering a special valentines dinner. We went right over. We were able to get a salad and roll, steak, potatoes and cheesecake for desert for $7 a person. We were so pleased to not have to eat at the motor lodge that we tipped well.

On this day of love next week, I think we'll play it safe this year, no trying to recreate special moments. We'll be in California visiting my sister and boy do I have some fun Valentine surprises! Here's wishing you love and some of those cherry heart suckers, yum.
